TEXTURES
Back to Nature
Human Nature shows man’s need to return to a more sustainable way of living. People will want to get back in touch with the things that touch them, both emotionally and physically.
Turmoil in the world – from terrorism to climate change – is resulting in growing disaster areas and temporary habitation, such as refugee camps. Droughts and floods will continue to cause havoc with food crops affecting millions of people in the years to come. With such social pressure, it’s increasing a common conscience with people feeling connected with one another and raising the need to go back to the roots and live a more sustainable life. In this form of architecture, the use of decoration is unreasonable, its value depends only on the raw material. Futuristic architecture promotes the use of steel, glass and cement, free of painting and ornaments, only rich in the beauty of its shape and lines.
These buildings naturally possess a power of motion that is by far stronger compared to horizontals and perpendiculars. The appreciation of flawed art, buildings, products, experiences and people will have an impact on our lives. Our tastes in beauty standards are evolving from a perfect to an imperfect aesthetic. The desire for flawless skin will be replaced by the desire to look cutely unique. Makeup will be used to mimic the appearance of natural beauty, such as highlighting blemishes and freckles. Human Nature is also about handmade crafts, the farm-to-fabric movement, bio textiles, and the maker’s movement. It blurs the boundaries of the natural and the synthetic. It examines the moments where our organic world collides with the digital realm.
There’s a modern eco-feel in Human Nature fabrics with the use of plastic made from wool and leather-like fabric made from pineapple leaves. Fabrics reflect layers of life, and come from algae, mushrooms or are animal-inspired like peacock feathers. Warm sandy tones and cool stone colours are drawn straight from nature. There are plush materials, furry fabrics, slouchy shapes, marble and corkwood.
PATTERNS Geometrics
Geometric patterns have been on an upward trend for years now, so much so that you can find geometric patterned anything, anywhere. In 2020, this kind of pattern is all about balance and being creating a statement with bold and vibrant patterns.
Sticking classic or contemporary patterns, the use of this kind of prints or aesthetic has to be carefully put together, by picking it for a specific area where it will create a bold statement. Floor tiles, or a thin-lined geometric wallpaper with a not so busy pattern, are some of the best examples, and it’s all about being strategic.
INSPIRATION Cultural Fusion
Globalisation is bringing people of the east and west closer. Cultural references are also influenced by trade, digital connection, migration and media, mechanisms that challenge and reinforce one culture over another.
People get inspired by what and who they see online and this goes beyond whatever culture they are living in. There will always be local style and cultural niches, but people will be influencing others like never before. The evolution of connectivity, both real and virtual, are driving this trend – which focuses on a growing sense of community, cultural sharing and breaking boundaries. Just like a painting, a movie or a song, fashion plays a main role in the fusion of different cultures and influences.
Culture Fusion brings together a diverse mix of cultural references. A colourful mix of influences ignites a sense of community and togetherness. Red-based earthy tones and spicy yellows are at the heart of this trend: a vibrant and rebellious direction that takes combinations from various cultures into a fresh, unexpected remix.
Patterns, artefacts and even elements of cultural identity are combined to define a new sense of shared visual identity.
There is a deep yearning to learn about traditions and techniques such as quilting, crochet, and patchworking. Cultural identities and iconography are reinterpreted in unexpected ways. Materials are felted wool, refined quilting, and high shine fabrics. Patterns include organic prints, exotic motifs.
