Created by renowned designers Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen, originally designed in 1949 and added to the Carl Hansen & Son collection in 2014 – in a fully upholstered saddle leather version – the classic Metropolitan Chair will now be available in another edition featuring a veneer back and a leather-upholstered seat.

Originally conceived as a conference chair, the Metropolitan Chair premiered at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild Furniture Exhibition in 1949 in a version with a wooden seat and back with a tensioned veneer construction. In 1960 it appeared in a new, fully upholstered leather version. The time has come to once again allow the two materials to unite in a very elegant design.

The opportunity to expose more wood and thus achieve a simpler and more organic look, as well as the possibility to choose from their entire leather collection and thus from a wider colour palette, broadens the chair’s appeal. The simplified version is more informal in appearance, making it suited to the home environment. It’s an excellent choice for dining, conference and meetings and works well as an office guest chair or simply as a sculptural element in the home.

Ejner Larsen and Aksel Bender Madsen’s collaborations resulted in almost 300 designs, with the Metropolitan Chair being their crowning achievement. It is available with an oak or walnut veneer back in various finishes and with a leather seat, or with both the seat and back fully upholstered in natural, cognac or black saddle leather.
