‘Our brands are like tools for an artist. They give our designers the freedom to create something unique and go beyond the basic functional aspects of design,’ so says Gurmat Nahal.
With a background in art and design and early mentoring at the Winchester School of Art, bulthaup | living kitchens’ Director and Co-Owner Gurmat Nahal set the foundation for a career steeped in design theory and principles. Engaged in the high-end kitchen sector since 2000, he’s worked with other prestigious brands and with many influential architects and firms, including Sir Norman Foster, Candy & Candy, Kelly Hoppen and Grimshaw & Partners.
He recalls: ‘We launched bulthaup | living kitchens South Africa in Cape Town in early 2013 because we felt there was a gap in the market for such high-end kitchen furniture, which offered the finest craftsmanship, quality and design. The prestigious neighbourhoods along the Atlantic Seaboard, as well as Constantia and Bishops Court, were perfectly positioned for bulthaup | living kitchens products, especially the b3 range, which offers virtual design freedom. Plus, high-end finishes not previously available in South Africa, including perfect matt laminate and striking aluminium tones. The Johannesburg showroom in Kramerville, launched a year later, reinforced the brand presence in South Africa and the continent beyond. However, something was missing. And that was a brand that reflected our values, but went beyond the kitchen.
‘We believe we’ve found it in the design ethos and aesthetic of Rimadesio. The clean lines and extensive range of finishes allow for creative design solutions within living spaces. The product range is very varied and consists of furniture for sitting room, dining room and bedroom; plus wardrobes. doors and room dividers, which are a particular wonder and work of art.’
The Italian designer / manufacturer Rimadesio has been producing spectacular furniture: doors, sliding panels, shelving units, walk-in wardrobes and a collection of complementary furniture for 60 years. Defined through its highly architectural interpretation, the collection reveals a precise and unmistakable style, a balance between form, precision and a unique match of materials and exclusive finishes. Their collection is constantly increasing in size and forever evolving in style. To say that Rimadesio produces systems for sub-dividing environments, and for the architectural definition of internal spaces, is to deny the superlative nature of this product. Rimadesio creates highly-stylised objects, designed to deliver a superb look, but which still lend themselves to daily lifestyle; further, they fit the concept of contemporary living advocated by this company.
