Sculpture in the service of intuition and existential contemplation; carving harmony with the material’s origin.

Richard Forbes’ @studiorichardjforbes audacious tact of allowing intuition rather than intellect to guide his hand has produced the least sensational, most passive and powerful series I’ve seen in decades. His effort toward simplicity is daring and dare I say, lapidary.

By penetrating the limitations and absurdity of greed, this stage of our century is discovering and recovering solutions and alternatives to…so much. And indeed, the tension between the deliberate dialogue that Forbes’ works provoke, and by contrast the gentle form in which they’re completed, proclaims freedom and clarity — by abandoning pomposity. The sculptor is one truly belonging to our century.

As writes Sean O’Toole for Richard Forbes’ forthcoming publication, ‘…his mesmerising rose quartz sculptures embody sculptural restraint. Often half-formed and incomplete, they showcase his understanding of moderation as a necessary gesture in sculpture.’

Fifteenth-Century Palazzo Renovation in Florence

This apartment is located in Borgo San Frediano, the Oltrarno district in Florence on ‘the other side of Arno River’– voted one of the coolest ‘hoods in the world.

Bold colours, tailor-made solutions, natural materials and iconic designer furniture pieces define the light-filled spacious interiors where the neutral hues of the walls contrast with the nuances of the painted ceilings.

Important artwork, coffered ceilings and frescoes add value and testify to the apartment’s longevity: ingredients for honouring the charm of the location and its ancient Italian history, brought back to life in the present.

A Turkish bath can be found on the second floor accessed via a spiral staircase in pietra serena – an original element of the apartment. The original floor in Tuscan terracotta – one of the oldest and most traditional materials – has been preserved.

A Dynamic Play of Light Inside a Modern Breezeway House with Mount Glory Views

Material elements here are minimal. The exterior is clad in oxidised corrugated and perforated steel and Siberian larch. The interior maintains this simple palette with steel, glass, and concrete. Larch is used on the floors, walls, windows frames, and ceilings. Warm, light, and rustic in character, the wood wraps up the walls to the ceiling and continues outside, particularly in the home’s living space, which is anchored by a cast-in-place concrete fireplace.

Some theories place the origins of the breezeway house, dog-run, or possum-trot, dogtrot architecture style in the southern Appalachian Mountains. It was common throughout the Southeastern United States during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The main style point was a large breezeway (instead of a hallway) through the centre of the house to cool occupants in the hot southern climate.
