A soft spoken gentleman, passionate and adventurous, Jean Pierre Smith – patron chef and baker extraordinaire at Lust Bistro & Bakery – strives to create dishes that are simple, fresh and without pretence.
His food journey started after he finished a degree in Industrial Psychology. ‘I enjoyed cooking from a young age, but didn’t know I wanted to become a professional chef,’ says Smith. Travelling through the UK, European mainland and South Korea his love and appreciation for food was born. At the Stellenbosch Institute of Culinary Arts upon his return to SA, he started building on his impressive resumé.
He’s worked alongside some of SA’s top creative foodies: Matthew Gordon, Executive Chef from Haute Cabrière; Kees Beyers, master chocolatier from Gauteng and Master in Fine Dining, Frank Zlomke from Grande Roche restaurant in Paarl. His talent earned him a spot on American illusionist, David Copperfield’s private island in the Bahamas.
